Advice please

Hi ,

3rd time out yesterday on my North Fish.
Was able to , although very shaky moves- pull off a few gybes. Wind was hovering around the 15mph -kite 13m.

1. when turning do I 1st turn board then kite or visa versa or both at the same time.I generally felt that by turning kite first and board follow i got a good pull around , but at times kite appeared to stall and i had to quickly correct before it wanted to fall back (could have just been the poor wind conditions/me going too much down wind before edging again)
2. Is it just me or does the surfboard work the legs a lot more than the TT (I am learning strapless) . My stance at the moment is pretty much both knees bent with front foot up against the skyhook and back foot near the back skyhook.

Hey Gavin

You are doing well!

Yup, turn kite first and follow, always keeping tension in the lines, it's all about timing.
You need to be aggressive turning the kite in the light stuff. The key is keeping the kite powered so it does not back stall.

I do downloops when it is really light winds. Just be careful, get it wrong and you are gonna find your kite in the drink and possibly yourself wrapped up in your lines. Been there done that! ; p

Yes, it works your legs big time! I find my achilles and thigh muscles take a hammering in the rough stuff as you are constantly sucking up chop and dealing with waves whilst trying to stay in contact with your board, so a good stance is important here. Sounds like you are doing it right. Just remember you don't always have to ride with your back foot all the way back. You will need to adjust it depending on the conditions. I regularly have my back foot off of my rear deck grip to get up to speed, then return it to my grip to deal with chop and waves.

Couple of things I would add. You will have a stronger side that you ride ie I ride goofy so right foot forward. When I'm riding heal side on my starboard tack I will send the kite back the other way and start to ride toeside on my port tack, then I will gybe to ride natural, when I want to turn back onto a starboard tack I will gybe so I'm riding toeside then I'll steer the kite back. My toeside riding is soooo much stronger than my natural heal side that I can get a really nice carve on that port tack. Also don't be afraid to use the whole board whilst you're learning, you might even want to ditch the sky hooks so they don't impede your movement, and don't get too hung up on gybing I only really gybe when I want to make ground up up wind.

Down loops are nice in light wind as the kite doesn't lose momentum, give it try next time just make sure the board is pointing down wind:-)
