Quick update from cape town. Yesterday the afternoon winds picked up to around 30 to 38mph and most riders were out on 9m kites. This is towards the lower end of the wind required for the comp. Seemed the really strong cape town thermal was not going to fully kick in.

Lewis - won his round to progress with some really strong riding. He stayed hooked in with some big kiteloops, front roll kiteloops and rotations. He rode a 9m vegas. Lewis also doubled up as the event commentator.

Sam light - sam was impressive with big kiteloops and a high handlepass. Sam is in the double elimination against youri zoon and mark jacobs...! To be run on sunday
Sam was riding a 7m or 9m fuel.

Arron hadlow - put in a really impressive display to win his group. Arron landed a megaloop kgb at the end of his heat in 35mph. Looking very strong to go far in this comp. Riding a 9m vegas.

Oly sweeney - rode well and put in a nice high handlepass but is out of the competition. Oly was getting some huge air in the warm up to the comp.

Stitch up of the comp - Ariel Corniel going out. He rode so hard and landed around 6 really high handlepasses. Also surprised marc jacobs has to go through the double eliminations. Seems Ariel and Marc went for technical tricks more than megaloops and did not quite work out for them. Marc had a few heavy landings in shallow water but rode away fine.

Alex pastor landed the hardest trick with a 12m high double handlepass. Alex looked to be going for high freestyle over kiteloops. Alex progressed through his group.

youri zoon - seemed to be having an off day and went in to the double eliminations. Wind or kickers did not work out for him.

Jessie richman is looking very good with some super powerful kiteloop handlepasses in 35mph wind on his 7m torch. Jessie is a real entertainer to watch and took a few big beatings but bounced back up. He will go a long way in this.

Reno romeu was a crowd pleaser with 4 to 5 rotations on 14m jumps. He really showed a lot of variety.

Tom herbert got the longest jump with a really floaty jump near the beach, some nice board off's and jesus walks.

The heat to watch will be sam light on sunday. Highest jump so far is around 15.6m.

From what I saw, Mr Hadlow was performing like an absolute beast. Still my fave to win.

Lewis took a very bad crash on a massive kiteloop. He was up around 15m when the kite choked on the way back up. Lewis hit the water so hard he was knocked unconscious in the waves. Reno Romeu was very quick to react and saved his life by getting him back to shore quickly. The waves were really big yesterday (10 to 12ft waves).

Aaron Hadlow won the event against a final of Jessie Richman, Kevin Langaree and Reno Romeu. The crowd seemed to be in favour of Kevin winning it. For me the stand out riders were Jessie Richman and Reno. Jessie is smaller than the others and rode a 7m torch, while Kevin was on a 10m torch, and Aaron a 9m vegas. Jessie was on fire in the final and trowing some huge kiteloop handlepasses in 40mph winds. Towards the end he dropped his kite in the waves and that lost him 5 minutes in a 20min heat. With the waves being so big any rider that dropped their kite had a battle on to get it air borne before a wave munched it. They all have a beach helper who brings them a back up kite or board over.

Aaron landed several magaloop kgb's to take the final. Seems a trick only he can land. Local rider Oswald Smith was looking very good until he tried the magaloop kgb and crashed hard and had to be rescued by the medics.

Tom Herbert added some really stylish riding with big board off's and rotations. Tom has a unique style and adds some variety to the competition.

French rider Anton Raglin was a real crowd pleaser and was right up there with the best. He came into the comp as a less well known rider but served it to the seasoned pro's.

I think the highest jump was around 19m.

Lassie walker is also in hospital after a horror crash which knocked him unconscious.

i watched the live feed. Lewis crash was a horror and it wa great to see the other riders all react so quickly. the rescue boat came in later - but i don't know the logistics and distance involved. what was really odd was the live feed commentators just carried on talking about new kit and what a great sport this is, whilst we were watching images of what was a really serious incident. not sure if they see the same images or not, but it was very strange...

I didn't realise that he was unconscious..
that's really bad :-/
I have to say his previous heat was something special. I's say it was one of the performances of the event.

I keep watching it trying to figure out why he stalled out.
I cant see the angle of the kite vs the wind direction, but everything else looked textbook. Just can't understand why the kite didn't climb.
(no it's not a dig at the vegas) just something went wrong and I can't quite figure out why it stalled out so.
Maybe one of those jumps where the kite flies in to a pocket of air that's really weak and that, plus his speed of travel downwind, means his lines never tighten.

sad end to a charging contest.
I have to say - as dis the commentators - his riding is night and day better when you compare it to a few months ago.
Lets hope he surfaces with a smile.

Reports are sketchy come out of SA, info from Dan Charlish is saying he is in an induced coma on a ventilator due to water in his lungs from secondary drowning

Let's all hope Lewis makes a speedy recovery!

I watched from a different angle this morn, and you can see more of where it went wrong. Spoke to Matt @ Kiteworld this morn via email and it looks like a full recovery prognosis, even after what we heard so far, but that's still not 1st hand. Matt did say it was by far the worst hit he's ever seen, and that Reno was credited with getting his head up and in, quite possibly saving his life.
Lets hope all turns out well for him fast - he's gonna be spooked to find out he's missed the party, by a number of days...

Little update from Courtney.

Lewis is doing well, but is still induced. it may not be until Thursday that they wake him. She seemed positive that things are going well.
No broken bones or internal damage fro sure.

Fingers crossed for him.
