Landing backward at that speed must have been one hell of an impact. Would wearing some kind of head protection reduce the risk to competitors?

Apparently not. The explanation I read is that water isn't hard enough that a helmet would help & could actually make the impact worse as the additional diameter of a helmet would increase the resistance and therefore increase the amount the brain bounces against the skull. Obviously this doesn't apply if you hit a bit of driftwood, a rock, your board.....

Today's update is that Lew is still doing well.
He is due to have a Tracheotomy on Friday then bring him round over the weekend.

Lasse is now out and on doctors orders to take it easy. He is still stoked about his epic session on sunday.
He has been with Lew and says they are really looking after him and are happy with his recovery.

Good to hear he is doing well. I guess with this type of event accidents are inevitable, although I think the safety boat should have got to him sooner.

I hope that the planned regaining of consciousness goes smoothly when the time is considered right.

Having watched a lot of the big wave surfing over recent months from Hawaii, I wonder why KOTA didn't opt to have jet-skis with sleds. It works so well for the surfers when there is little time to extract them from the white water before the next wave comes. Presumably the organisers will be reviewing the situation and the top riders will be consulted in what they think is best needed to ensure their safety.

I think this is the first year that there have been a number of serious injuries/accidents. Would be criminal (literally) not to review the safety precautions and medical facilities and make improvements for next year.

Photos up now on his Facebook page with family. Looks in great spirit considering the amount of wires round him and tracheostomy

All good news from SA, Lewis is good and well, now posting on social netwroking, about the incident and his recovery and thanking the people who helped recover him from the water
He has some recovery time to get through, but I suspect it wont be long before his name appears on Woo leaderboards again!
