Yori Zoon moving to BEST?

Shoot the breeze and stay in the loop with the unhinged and unhooked word on the street.

They have been after him and other riders for a while, be a shame if its true, the only winner would be Youri and the shit ton of money he will get paid!

who knows though have to see what develops and what they feel he would add to them that they don't have already, there is no guarantee of him winning another title again, which lets face it is what gets the marketing dept moist so what does he add that the existing riders don't have…? other than a watertight deal to carry on riding Brunotti so its not like he can help them shift boards.

I am not sure having international riders makes that much difference if you are an established brand, although in the long run it might reduce your brand recognition. The reality is most kitesurfers are more influenced by what they see on their local beach than competitions. The RPM is still one of the best kites out there, regardless of whether zoon rides it or not.

BEST seems to be sponsoring alot of riders, I have also heard rumours about them taking a famous UK rider from slingshot - for some reason they seem to have more money to spend on sponsorship than the other brands.

Have to disagree with this slighty, while it doesnt alter perception and buying of a good percentage of riders the big names will help. There are more than enough folks out there that love riding their RPM's, I remember quite a few msgs across various forums asking where they could demo, and even wanting to purchase kites in the size that youri had specifically made for him.

Plus international riders may not make much of an influence here as our national media isnt the greatest at covering minority sports. Go to other countries and they are all over it in the national press which increases brand coverage and exposure to local riders. Just look at Gisela, even before she signed with Best last year. She is revered as one of the most influential women in spain never mind kitesurfing due to business and media exposure from winning so many world championships. Pity it didnt happen here for the likes of Aaron

A good rider helps your brand recognition, and if you are lucky they can help your R&D guys develop even better gear. Some riders compete and win, some get great press for high risk riding and others are good guys on the beach. All of these types are needed to support your brand. When you've got the money to sponsor new team riders it makes sense to go for the BEST ones.

You really do need one good rider in each discipline that you sell to. The gear has to look like it does the job for someone as picky/selective as a pro.

But after you have one, there's really no point in collecting more riders who do just the same thing, at the same places, in the same comps and in the same videos. So for a kite brand, 1x Surfer, 1x Tour Freestyler, 1x Wakestyler, 1x Girl and 1x Racer should do it. Harsh but frugal.

The better option then is to use the budget for grass roots projects and to make sure that instructors, store staff and local heroes are into your gear.

Joe, we do that too, grass roots support is important, but we are a global company. So from the Uk kiters might not see everything we do. We rocked up at the GPS comp at Martha's Vineyard two weeks ago with a full HD webcast studio in tow, helping to promote one area of the sport that gets little coverage. We do what we can, whenever we can. If you know of a local project that needs some support let us know.

With regards to the team we aim to have a spread of great riders across all disciplines, freestyle, surf, freeride, wakestyle and lifestyle riders who can pull together the whole low impact travel vibe . We still have some more sign ups to announce in the next few weeks and hopefully that will fill some gaps.

Are BEST the largest brand in the world now? They seem to have alot of money to spend on sponsoring riders.

Out of mere curiosity, I'd be interested to know how much these top riders earn. Presumably a salary plus costs?? And how much extra gear do you need to shift to justify those costs? For me personally, it really doesn't bother me who rides for who, but the brands must see some value in it.

Depends what you mean by largest. Makes the most profit, turns over the most, sells the most units or spends the most......

By largest I mean the largest in terms of units sold per year.
